A path is the specification of (a file and) a folder location. An important distinction is between relative and absolutepaths.
An absolute path is the complete specification of a file and folder. For an SPSS data file it may typically look like
- A relative path specifies a file or folder relative to some other location. That is, it is a partial specification.
- For example, you can specify your CD in SPSS with
- Now you can open a file from it by using a relative path like
GET FILE 'Raw_data.sav'.. This path is relative to ("starts from") the default directory.
- Since the same goes for saving files, this may save you a lot of typing and renders your syntax more flexible.
