Summary
Toolbars can be very useful in SPSS. They allow users to do a lot of stuff with a single mouse click. However, some users may feel there's some limitations to their default configuration. An ideal way to get around these is to assemble your own toolbar.
Some limitations of standard toolbars
Most users will use three windows when they work with SPSS: the Data Editor, Syntax Window and Output Viewer. By default, each window has its own toolbar(s). Some limitations of their default configuration are
- Incompatibility: you can use the standard toolbars only in the windows they were designed for. For example, you can't have the syntax toolbar in the Data Editor window;
- Some tools seem rather useless (for example, there's a
print
icon in the Data Editor for sending raw data to a printer); - Other tools are accessed faster with a shortkey (for example,
undo
andredo
); - Experienced users may perhaps prefer type syntax for some other tools;
- Some useful tools (opening a new syntax file for instance) are absent from all toolbars
An alternative toolbar configuration
By assembling your own toolbar, you can choose exactly which tools you do or do not find useful. In contrast to default toolbars, you can display your own toolbar in all main SPSS windows simultaneously. The steps described below will quickly walk you through the process.
Creating a New Toolbar
After clicking , you'll see two areas. The top area is only for toggling the visibility of those toobars available for any given SPSS window. Since we'd like to create a toolbar, we click .

Populating Our New Toolbar
After clicking
we can choose a name for our toolbar and start editing it. Toolbar tools have been categorized. After selecting (clicking) one of the categories in the left main box, all tools belonging to it will appear in the right main box. From there, we can drag-and-drop the tools we find useful onto our toolbar.
After clicking 'Continue', we return to the Customize Toolbar window. Under 'Show' each toolbar's visibility can be toggled. Under 'Name' a toolbar can be selected for editing or deleting. Note that the default Data Editor toolbar can be edited but not deleted.

Hi,
All of sudden, after using my version of SPSS for 7 months the toolbar was missing. Your instructions are great to build it back, but there doesn't seem to be the option to add the green triangle than runs syntax back onto it. Any ideas on how to get that back? It's not listed under the "Run" category (or any other) in the Edit Toolbar window.

Hi Janelle, thanks for the compliment!
In my version, it's under Run => Selection as shown in this screenshot. If that's not the case in your version, could you please let me know which OS (Windows version or Mac) and SPSS version you're using?
P.s. on Windows, the CTRL + r shortkey is equivalent to the green arrow but faster, especially when combined with the little known F2 shortkey. I don't have a Mac but I guess it should have something similar.

hi,
All of the sudden,my toolbar disappear and I can`t bring it back. Could you please help me with it?

Hi Reyhaneh!
Many people had this problem. I believe it only happens with the standard, built-in toolbars. I think it does not happen with a self-built toolbar -which will be way better than the standard toolbars anyway- so that's a pretty easy workaround. Give it a go, it really is a piece of cake.

Hi Ruben
Thanks for your respond. But the problem is that I can't customize new toolbar because I don't have view tab or other toolbar tabs up there. I don't know how to bring the toolbar back.
